Fight Or Flight: A South Side Story
Forbidden love and fierce rivalry drive Jeff Hollister, a street-smart high school senior and gang leader of the Hurricanes, to the brink of disaster. Thinking he’s got the world in his back pocket, and the police at a safe distance, he and his scrappy gang of teenage delinquents come to discover they don’t always come out on top after all.
Street Map
The street map is an overview of the Hurricane and Tornado territories, and their relationship to the Upper and Lower Plaza, Salisbury High School, and neutral grounds including Bobcat Hill, the sand field, and Mr. Big. (Some of my high school friends might recognize the layout.) The dots on the map depict the homes of some of the characters, most notably Jeff, Mick, Crazy Legs, and Train in Hurricane territory and Happy Jack and Craig in Tornado territory. The two neighborhoods are separated by the long road, Arrow Drive.
Plaza Map
The Plaza Map is bisected by Burrough Street, with the Lower Plaza on the left and the Upper Plaza on the right. The map is two-dimensional, of course, but in reality the grounds slope downward to the Lower Plaza from the western curb of the main road, and the front parking lot of the Upper Plaza is slightly elevated over the street. I say “in reality” because, like the street map, the Plaza Map is modeled after my hometown neighborhood, where I lived in the formative years of Fight or Flight (and still do!).
Final Note
Having the maps based on the grounds where I grew up and still live provides a unique opportunity for some visual enhancements on this webpage. Like any town, the grounds and buildings can and do change over the years, so some of the locations in the novel have altered dramatically, but many of them are still the same. I’m hoping to post some pics from time to time to add some real-life perspective to the maps. In a literary sense, the maps themselves are replicas of the charcoal sketches drawn by Denny, but in reality, they were created by the same graphic design company that developed the cover art, Streetlight Graphics, llc.
